An overview

Our Reception class at Andalusia Academy is following the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).  The EYFS is a comprehensive framework of education, from birth to five, initiated and structured by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF). EYFS is a play based and developmental approach to learning that recognises that children are unique.  This allows us to help children become strong and confident learners by providing a supportive learning environment.

At Andalusia Academy, we plan around the six areas of learning recommended by the DCSF and we provide Arabic, Quran and Islamic studies in addition.

The six areas of learning are:
  • Communication, language and literacy
  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Problem solving, reasoning and numeracy
  • Creative development
  • Physical development
  • Knowledge and understanding of the world

Islamic studies is also embedded into the curriculum.  It is also provided incidentally thoughout the school day by taking opportunities for the children to remember Allah in everything that occurs, reading Islamic stories and learning Islamic songs.

In Arabic the children will learn to recognise and begin to write a range of letters - focusing particularly on those in their names. They will continue to enjoy stories and songs in Arabic and start to recognise names of familiar objects. Further details of both Qu'ran and Arabic will be given to you soon. Keep an eye on the class notice board to see which is the letter /surah of the weeek.

Singing more songs both new and familiar; listening to rhythm and pattern in sounds and beginning to make up their own rhythms and songs.
Also continue to use their imagination in art and design, using a variety of materials to make a display to retell a favourite stroy, as well as acting stories out.

Physical

Communication Language and Literacy

Continuing to link sounds to letters, blending sounds and learning formation of these letters to enable them to write their names correctly. Also begin to use these skills to read and write labels and short captions for labelling their toys and photos. Listening to stories, retelling, acting out and talking about them using puppets, storyphones and roleplay. Developing their skills and enjoyment of using language in everything they do.
